About the Collection

The National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo, Japan to Washington, DC—a beloved symbol of our countries’ bond across borders. Each year, visitors from around the world gather to celebrate springtime and enjoy the Japanese tradition of hanami (flower viewing) along the Tidal Basin, on the National Mall, and with Japanese artworks at the National Museum of Asian Art.
